Out of the three major airports in the Washington, D.C. region, Reagan National Airport had the highest number of cancelled flights at 3.14 percent in the year of 2018, according to data published on March 25 by the online travel insurer InsureMyTrip.com.
Reagan National ranked ninth worst among 75 American airports last year for most number of cancelled flights. The data for the ranking was compiled from the Department of Transportation’s Bureau of Transportation Statistics for the whole year of 2018.
The highest percentage of called off flights among all ranked airports was recorded for New York’s LaGuardia Airport for the second year in a row. At 4.09 percent, according to InsureMyTrip, the airport had scheduled flights cancelled due to a major blizzard on January 18, 2018, which was a leading factor for the high score, also causing a temporary shutdown.
At 0.30 percent, Salt Lake City International Airport recorded the smallest percentage of scheduled flights that were cancelled in 2018.
The 19th worst airport according to the data was BWI Marshall Airport with 2.25 percent of scheduled flights being cancelled in 2018, while Dulles International Airport was ranked 33rd at 1.7 percent.
Weather disruptions led to the majority of flight cancellations last year, including the winter storm on January 18, as well as the hurricanes Florence and Michael.
