All aspects of the geek culture, including comic books, sci-fi, fantasy, horror, anime, gaming, TV, movies, animation, music, comedy, art, science, and much more is celebrated at D.C.’s comic con. It is currently run by the teams behind Anime NYC, Rose City Comic Con, and Big Easy Con.
Ben Penrod, the founder of Awesome Con, started selling parts of his comics collection in the late 1990s on eBay. He would then use the money to buy more comics on eBay.
He turned his hobby into a full-time job in 2008 and created Ninja Pirate Gear, an online comic book store. “After spending the next three years traveling the country selling comics at conventions, Ben and Steve Anderson from Third Eye Comics created the Annapolis Comic-Con, soon followed by the Southern Maryland Comic-Con, both still thriving local shows that cater to comic book lovers like themselves,” according to the Awesome Con website.
Penrod began planning Awesome Con in 2012, before launching the first comics Con in April 2013. It was a success and soon became one of the largest fan conventions on the East Coast.
Participants can also book a room in one of the official hotels of Awesome Con. Tickets can be purchased at the door. Or you can buy tickets online here.
