DC’s ‘Awesome Con’ Starts at Walter E. Washington Convention Center

-

Over 80,000 fans of comic books, technology and science, television and film, custom art and over-the-top cosplay will come together for the seventh annual Awesome Con at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center from April 26 through April 28.

The Con, which is known as Mid-Atlantic’s premier pop culture convention, is organized by LeftField Media. Hundreds of hours of programs include panels and exclusive reveals hosted by celebrities, cosplay fashion shows, gaming tournaments, pop culture memorabilia collections, among other activities for families.

All aspects of the geek culture, including comic books, sci-fi, fantasy, horror, anime, gaming, TV, movies, animation, music, comedy, art, science, and much more is celebrated at D.C.’s comic con. It is currently run by the teams behind Anime NYC, Rose City Comic Con, and Big Easy Con.

Ben Penrod, the founder of Awesome Con, started selling parts of his comics collection in the late 1990s on eBay. He would then use the money to buy more comics on eBay.

He turned his hobby into a full-time job in 2008 and created Ninja Pirate Gear, an online comic book store. “After spending the next three years traveling the country selling comics at conventions, Ben and Steve Anderson from Third Eye Comics created the Annapolis Comic-Con, soon followed by the Southern Maryland Comic-Con, both still thriving local shows that cater to comic book lovers like themselves,” according to the Awesome Con website.

Penrod began planning Awesome Con in 2012, before launching the first comics Con in April 2013. It was a success and soon became one of the largest fan conventions on the East Coast.

Participants can also book a room in one of the official hotels of Awesome Con. Tickets can be purchased at the door. Or you can buy tickets online here.
