Shakespeare Theatre Company

Taught by currently working theatre professionals and award-winning actors in the District, acting classes at Shakespeare Theatre Company are available both for beginners and experienced students. If you are interested in playwriting and directing, they have some programs for you, as well. Instructors provide you with individual feedback. Located in Northeast DC, Atlas Performing Arts Center offers educational performance and engagement experiences for individuals of every age. A variety of programs are available, including those aiming to connect artists and arts organizations with audiences. City at Peace, a free youth development program at Atlas, focuses on examining marginalization based on race, gender, or sexuality, through performing arts. 

Washington Improv Theater

Operating in the District since 1988, Washington Improv Theater is home to some of the city’s most experienced improvisers. The theater, described as “the premier producer of longform improv in the DC area” by its administrators, trains around 1,100 residents every year. Classes are available online via Zoom, as well. Subjects taught here include stand-up comedy, sketch comedy/TV Pilot writing, comedic songwriting, and more.

The independent, nonprofit dramatic arts school aims at making theater training accessible to everyone regardless of their age, income, or experience. They offer a wide range of programs including acting/playwriting classes for beginners, public speaking for non-theatre professionals, Saturday acting classes for teens, summer camps for children, and more. More than 2,000 individuals participate in their classes each year. Both in-person and online lessons are available.

National Conservatory of Dramatic Arts
