Washington, D.C. ranks eighth – with a total score of 61.79 – on the WalletHub’s list of top 10 U.S. cities with best job markets in 2019.
Using 30 key indicators to assess job strength, WalletHub compared more than 180 cities across the country on factors like job opportunities, employment growth, monthly average starting salary, and employment outlook.
Washington, D.C. also ranked 11th for job market specifically, and 32nd for socio-economics.
“We determined each city’s weighted average across all metrics to calculate its overall score and used the resulting scores to rank-order our sample. In determining our sample, we considered only the city proper in each case, excluding cities in the surrounding metro area,” WalletHub explained.
Some companies like Abbvie, Frederick National Laboratory for Cancer Research, Global Blood Therapeutics, and Technical Resources International have life sciences positions open in the area.
“Although the employment projections for 2019 appear to be promising, the job-hunting process can still be scary, especially for those entering the workforce for the first time or facing particular obstacles,” the report added.
The national unemployment rate has come down to an 18-year low, or 3.7 percent, while hiring has gone up, according to the recent jobs report by U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.
