One of Two Iowa State Students Killed in Boat Accident Turns Out DC Native

A resident of the District was among the two Iowa State University students who died when their boat capsized on an Iowa lake over the weekend.

The DC native has been identified as 20-year-old Yaakov Ben-David. He was a sophomore studying accounting, according to the Hamilton County sheriff’s office and Iowa State University police.

The other person drowned in the accident was reportedly Derek Nanni, 19, a freshman chemistry major from Normal, Illinois.

The incident took place on Little Wall Lake, in an area near the city of Ames on Sunday, officials say.

Three other athletes, who were also members of Iowa State Rowing Club, were rescued by locals in the region. Their names are unknown.

On Monday, search and rescue teams recovered the bodies of Ben-David and Nanni.

Authorities are still investigating the cause of the capsizing.
