DC Mayor, Officials Can Get $20,000 Pay Hike

-

D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser, Council Chairman Phil Mendelson and Attorney General Karl A. Racine are likely to get a pay hike of $20,000 each if the new bill introduced in the city council is passed.

Under the new bill, which was moved on Friday, the D.C. Mayor can get a salary hike of 20 percent, which means she’ll be paid a yearly salary of $220,000.

The Mayor, Council Chairman and Attorney General will be running for re-election in November without facing any major challenge. Their salary hike is expected in January next year, according to a report in The Washington Post.

Mendelson said he’s pushing for the salary hike since the Mayor’s salary has remained unchanged at $200,000 since 2007. As per the law of the district, the mayor’s salary cannot be raised while she is serving her current term. The salary of council chairman and attorney general is kept $10,000 below the salary of the mayor. Other council members will be able to get their salary hikes as usual.

If the new legislation is passed, the D.C. Mayor will be the fifth highest paid chief executive, according to The Post. Presently the Mayor of San Francisco is the highest paid mayor in the country, earning about $301,000 a year.

The bill will still have to pass through the normal legislative procedure in order to be passed, according to DCist. A public hearing on the bill is likely to be held in November.
