A Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) officer was shot in the District’s Petworth neighborhood Sunday night.

The incident took place after the officer stopped a driver in the 1400 block of Quincy Street NW at approximately 9 pm.

According to police, the man suddenly started shooting at the officer during the traffic stop, which resulted in their hospitalization. They were later released from the hospital following the treatment.

Police temporarily barricaded the streets in the area which ended at midnight on Monday.

DC Police Chief Robert Contee held a press conference on Monday, saying MPD has launched a manhunt, but the suspect was still at large.
