A new school for military families will be opened in 2020-21 on the Joint Base Anacostia-Bolling (JBAB), a Navy, Air Force base housing over 1,200 school children, following it’s approved by DC Public Charter School Board.
The school will be run by LEARN Charter School Network (LEARN Network), and will be their first school in Washington, DC. LEARN Network currently operates 10 elementary and middle schools in Illinois.
The new school will give admission to school-age students from 50 percent military families stationed at JBAB, and 50 percent students will come from DC families across the District. The school will provide education to students from grades PK-K to grade six in the first year of operation.
The school will fulfill the academic, social and emotional needs of children from mobile military families, drawing from the experience of school application team from a similar Charter school at Naval Station Great Lakes in North Chicago.
Ward 8’s Parent Operator Selection Team (POST), which comprises of four military families and four non-military families, designed a community Request for Proposals, out of which LEARN DC was selected to run the school.
The school will serve wards of mobile military families and address the unique challenges they face while enrolling their children in quality schools.
