The W Hotel in Washington, D.C. has launched a new service, which involves bringing a large table of dishes to your room, along with a microphone and a phone stand for $285 so that you can stream yourself while eating to your social media followers.
“Mukbang” means online broadcasting of an individual’s eating large amounts of food facing a camera as they interact with their viewers. It is the combination of two Korean words that mean “let’s eat” and “broadcast.”
The concept that is becoming increasingly popular among vloggers around the world using YouTube or Twitch originates from South Korea. It first gained popularity in the East Asian country in 2010.
The Verge reported that the D.C. location of the W Hotel introduced its extravagant “Sip & Slurp” menu to its potential customers with a video of Antoni Porowski, Netflix’s Queer Eye star who teaches recipes and kitchen tips in the show.
Porowski’s own “mukbang” room service experience in a D.C. W Hotel room was filmed and posted on YouTube Thursday. The video has already been watched over 16,000 times and received almost 400 likes.
The Sip & Slurp menu that comes with a cell phone stand and a microphone, which you are allowed to keep, is only available at the W Washington, D.C. for the time being.
If you are considering trying the special service, you should note that you cannot change anything in the $285 menu that includes the lobster, Big Belly Burger, Cherry Burger, Carrot Cake Tower, the last two being highly recommended by Porowski, among many other items.
