Private developers of Southwest’s waterfront neighborhood The Wharf have started construction on the second phase of the $2.5 billion development project along the Potomac River, following a groundbreaking ceremony on March 30.
D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser and D.C. Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton, together with representatives from Hoffman-Madison Waterfront (HMW), attended the ceremony to mark the kick-off of the construction’s second stage.
The project will continue with the development of a 3.2-million square foot neighborhood along the Potomac River south of the National Mall. In 2017, the first phase was completed of what is called “the largest private development in the city”.
“The Wharf is a tremendous example of how the District can, through innovative public-private partnerships, transform underdeveloped land into housing, jobs, and opportunity. Already, with Phase 1, The Wharf has become a world-class destination for residents and visitors alike,” said Bowser during her speech at the celebration.
Bowser said that Washington, D.C. is truly a waterfront city, and that they look forward to building on their progress and success. “Together, we will continue ensuring that Washingtonians along the Potomac and Anacostia Rivers – in all the surrounding wards – are able to enjoy and benefit from the many opportunities that our city and waterfronts have to offer,” she continued.
At full build-out, Phase 2 will include 625,000 square feet of Trophy office space (Parcels 6, 7, 10), 255 apartment residences (Parcel 8), 131 hotel rooms (Parcel 8), 96 condominium homes (Parcel 9), 109,000 square feet of ground-level retail shops and restaurants, 223 boat slips at The Wharf Marina, 1.5-acre park at M Street Landing, and 2 underground garages with more than 1,000 parking spaces.
Phase 2 of The Wharf is designed by an impressive architectural lineup in the country that includes a group of 13 architects and designers first announced by HMW in 2017.
