The Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) has released police body camera videos showing the moped crash that claimed the life of Karon Hylton-Brown following a police chase.
The two videos filmed by the officers’ body-worn cameras, one of them seven minutes long and the other around three minutes long, are redacted.
Four MPD officers were placed on non-contact leave Thursday in relation to their involvement in the incident. The move came after two nights of protests outside the Fourth District police station.
Hylton-Brown was riding a moped when officers tried to stop him for not wearing a helmet in the Brightwood Park neighborhood of Northwest DC last Friday, according to MPD. However, his family told the media that he was chased by the police and it led to the fatal collision.
The 20-year-old died on Monday, after staying in hospital for three days.
Hylton-Brown’s mother was among the protesters Tuesday night, demanding answers and asking for the release of the body camera footage related to the incident, as well as a full police report.
“Over a moped and some car keys, he lost his whole life,” said Hylton-Brown’s girlfriend, Amaala Jones-Bey, speaking to WUSA9. He was riding to a friend’s house to pick up his car keys, according to her.
Hylton-Brown reportedly died the day his daughter turned three months old.
