A 23-year-old suspect, who was wanted for stabbing to death 35-year-old Wendy Martinez in Logan Circle, has been arrested, D.C. police said on Thursday.
Identified as Anthony Crawford, the suspect had been absconding after attacking the woman on Tuesday evening at 11th Street, NW. According to authorities, the suspect has a criminal history and refused to cooperate with the authorities on the investigation.
Martinez was fatally stabbed by the suspect when she had gone out for a jog near Logan Circle on September 18. Later, she succumbed to her injuries.
The motive behind the attack, which was unprovoked, remains unclear, according to police.
“Whenever you have kind of this unexplained type of brutal attack that happens in our city, we do everything we possibly can to get to the bottom of it as quickly as we can,” said D.C. Police Chief Peter Newsham. “So it was a combination of efforts by the community, by the police, that we were able to get this guy relatively quick.”
Martinez, who worked as the chief of staff for a government affairs company, was engaged to be married last week. “Wendy should have been shopping for her wedding dress on Friday. There is a hole in our heart that will never be replaced,” said Martinez’s friend, Kristina Moore.
