Washington, D.C.’s MedStar Georgetown University Hospital has been included in the 2019 edition of “100 Great Hospitals in America” released by Becker’s Healthcare.
Becker’s Healthcare selected the hospitals for the list based on analysis of ranking and award agencies, including U.S. News & World Report‘s 2018-19 rankings, CareChex, Healthgrades, CMS star ratings, Leapfrog grades, and IBM Watson Health top hospitals. Nominations were also sought for the list.
MedStar Georgetown University Hospital is a 609-bed capacity non-profit teaching and research hospital. It is part of the MedStar Georgetown Transplant Institute. More than 900 physicians and nurse counselors provide healthcare for patients at the facility, which performs approximately 5,100 transplants, including 106 liver transplants, per year. The hospital focuses on four centers of excellence – cancer care, gastroenterology, neurosciences, and transplants.
MedStar Georgetown was ranked the No. 1 hospital in Washington, D.C. for the third consecutive year in 2018-19 by the U.S. News & World Report.
Three units of the hospital have also won the Beacon Award for Excellence by the American Association of Critical Care Nurses. The Georgetown Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center in the hospital has been given the National Cancer Institute designation and recognized as a Comprehensive Cancer Center.
“The hospitals included on this list have been recognized nationally for excellence in clinical care, patient outcomes, and staff and physician satisfaction. These institutions are industry leaders that have achieved advanced accreditation and certification in several specialties,” according to Becker’s Healthcare report.
Industry innovators who have created trends in healthcare technology, hospital management, and patient satisfaction are also on the list.
Among other hospitals on the list are Abbott Northwestern Hospital (Minneapolis), Aurora St. Luke’s Medical Center (Milwaukee), Banner University Medical Center Phoenix, Baylor University Medical Center (Dallas), Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (Boston), Boston Children’s Hospital, Cedars-Sinai Medical Center (Los Angeles), Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, Christiana Care Health System (Delaware), Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center, Emory St. Joseph’s Hospital (Atlanta), and Emory University Hospital (Atlanta).
It is noted by the Becker’s Healthcare that the list does not mean endorsement of the included hospitals, health systems or associated healthcare providers. Also, the organizations cannot pay for inclusion on the list.
