NBC Washington had initially reported that the victims identified themselves as members of the Proud Boys.
However, it is not clear at this time whether the suspects or victims involved in the attack have links with street demonstrators, according to DC Police Chief Peter Newsham.
“After more extensive investigation with the victims of the crime, we don’t know who [the suspects] are affiliated with,” Newsham said during Wednesday’s press conference.
The police chief added that all the current information relating to the incident was based on their preliminary investigation and their interviews with the victims at the hospital.
Police arrested three people on Tuesday night during the protests on Black Lives Matter Plaza and near the White House area.
