D.C. Homeland Security announced a flash flood emergency alert issued by the National Weather Service (NWS), warning residents against moving through flooded roads and sidewalks, advising them to stay off the roads. Local media reported on a number of road closures across the DMV area and dozens of motorists being left stranded.
If you’re in the #DC area, PLEASE STAY OFF THE ROADS! There is a FLASH FLOOD EMERGENCY alert in effect until 11:15am. Do NOT go through flooded roads/sidewalks. It’s difficult to know depth of water or what may be underneath— like downed, live wires. TURN AROUND, DON’T DROWN! https://t.co/E9s1z5zCrl

NWS posted a map of the “flash flood emergency area” over Twitter, saying that traveling would be “EXTRAORDINARILY dangerous, including washouts, #flooding over roads,” calling on residents to stay out of low areas and off the roads, as this is “not the ‘usual’ flooding.”
D.C. Fire and Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Department announced on Twitter that 15 people have been rescued from their cars during the flooding as of noon.
