Get Moving and Get Healthy with DC’s First ‘Open Streets’

-

Whether you are a biking enthusiast or just thinking it is a good idea to move your body every once in a while, you should be aware that there is a new outdoor activity coming to town on October 5: “Open Streets“.

It is sponsored by the Government of D.C., so don’t be surprised if you spot Mayor Muriel Bowser biking next to you.

D.C. residents of all ages are welcome to join the event that will take place along Georgia Ave NW from 10:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. Approximately three miles of the avenue will be closed to motor-vehicle traffic.

Biking, skating, aerobics, shopping, and more activities can be enjoyed at Open Streets, which is a program aiming to temporarily close streets to motor-vehicle traffic, making them available to people for healthy activities. Not only for adults or non-disabled individuals, but also for children and the disabled.

“Open Streets is a time to celebrate all of our city’s transportation options. We challenge you to get to the event by walking, biking, or taking public transit,” the event brief says.

With its slogan “No cars, Just People,” the initiative is hoping to inspire people to have a different view of the city’s streets by “encouraging physical activity, creating recreational opportunities, and fostering community building and education.”

You can meet others at the D.C. Bike Fair at Bruce Monroe Park (Columbia Road & Georgia Ave), where organizers will be encouraging everyone to try out a ride. And unlimited bike parking will be available along the route.

Free 24-Hour Passes will be given out for unlimited 30-minute Capital Bikeshare rides during the entire day on Saturday.

How to redeem your free 24-Hour Pass:

1. Download the Capital Bikeshare App.
2. Click on “Choose a pass” and select “24-Hour Pass.”
3. Click on “Add promo code” and enter “OpenStreetsDC.”
4. Enter your account information.
5. Enjoy your ride!

Twitter and Instagram hashtags for the event are #capitalbikeshare and #OpenStreetsDC. For further details, you can check out the event’s website.
