Parking Spots in DC Will Be Used as Mini Pop-Up Parks for Annual Event

-

Many parking spaces across the eight wards of Washington, D.C. will turn into pop-up parks on September 20 for PARK(ing) Day 2019, the District Department of Transportation (DDOT) announced

The DDOT is currently accepting applications from District residents and businesses, who want to take part in the annual event and show their creativity by building pop-up parks in curbside parking spots.

The event will take place September 20, from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. in D.C., as well as other U.S. cities.

PARK(ing) Day, which originally started in San Francisco in 2005, gives an opportunity to residents and businesses for “re-thinking the use of public space by converting metered on-street parking spaces into temporary parks,” according to the NPS.

Those interested in the event are encouraged to learn more about the application process, their pop-up park and design, through the DDOT’s information session, which is scheduled for Thursday, July 25. (You can email cynthia.lin@dc.gov for RSVP.)

Applicants should also take a look at the PARK(ing) Day event guidelines and requirements here, “before designing their park or beginning the permitting process.”

Note that the deadline to apply for PARK(ing) Day is Friday, August 16, 2019.
