Located in DC’s Cleveland Park neighborhood, the family-owned business has been offering affordable pottery painting classes to residents since 2004. Acrylic, canvas, and mosaic painting, and glass fusion are also available. Clients only pay for the pottery piece or mosaic they choose, and the price includes the time they spend in the studio, paints, glazing and firing, as well as instructions. You can select a piece to paint off the shelf of All Fired Up, from among their mugs, figurines, household items, vases, kitchenware, and more. If you are looking for a special item, they even research around the country and order it for you.

Serving the DC area from its historic Georgetown location, Hinckley Pottery provides classes to adults, teenagers, and children of every skill level. Both wheel classes and handbuilding sessions are two-and-a-half hours long each. Fees include personalized instruction, clay and most basic equipment used for making and glazing pots. They reserve a wheel for you in your class for 10 weeks. You may purchase additional items on-site in later stages such as special brushes, stains, trimming tools, custom-made ribs, throwing sticks, and more. “Try It Classes” are also available for those who are not ready to commit to a full 10-week session.

District Clay Center

Operating since 2014, District Clay Center offers both wheel and handbuilding classes to adults and kids whether they are experienced or complete beginners. The school provides clay and all the tools required for the classes. You can bring your own or buy tool kits by Kemper Tools, but you cannot bring your own clay. After registering for a program, clients are allowed to join any other standard class and open studio hours free of charge. You can opt for their One Shot classes to see if you like pottery. Both virtual and in-person workshops are also available. 

Eastern Market Pottery

Established in 1963, Eastern Market Pottery is a studio that focuses on instruction in wheel throwing for adult students, but also offers handbuilding classes. The studio, which is located in the basement of the historic Eastern Market building, features a slab roller along with large and small extruders. They assign a shelf to each client for their tools, aprons, and pots in progress during their attendance to a program. You can purchase tools at the studio or use the tools in the common storage. Drop-ins or single classes are not available at Eastern Market Pottery.
