Washington, D.C. has ranked 155th among 182 cities listed on the 2018’s Safest Cities in America report published by personal finance site WalletHub.
With a total score of 65.47 out of 100, D.C. has landed on the 166th spot in the ‘Home & Community Safety’ ranking, became 80th in terms of ‘Natural-Disaster Risk’, and 61st in the ‘Financial Safety’ ranking.
To assess the safety of Americans, more than 180 cities were compared by WalletHub across 39 key indicators. “Our data set ranges from assaults per capita to unemployment rate to road quality,” said financial writer Adam McCann, regarding the research. “At the top of the list of worries is cybercrime, which 71 percent of Americans worry about,” he explained.
WalletHub compared 182 cities, including the 150 most populated cities in the U.S., across three key dimensions to determine the safest cities – Home & Community Safety, Natural-Disaster Risk and Financial Safety.
“We evaluated those dimensions using 39 relevant metrics, which are listed below with their corresponding weights. Each metric was graded on a 100-point scale, with a score of 100 representing the highest level of safety,” the report notes.
“We then determined each city’s weighted average across all metrics to calculate its overall score and used the resulting scores to rank-order our sample.”
Only city propers were considered samples for the study. Columbia, Maryland, ranked the safest city in America, with a total score of 85.98.
