DC to Get Its First Vegan Doughnut Shop in 2019

-

Washington, D.C. will soon have its first vegan doughnut shop as Donut Run will be opening in the district in the spring of 2019.

“The day of our big announcement has arrived! And here it is—we are opening up our first shop in Takoma in spring 2019,” Donut Run announced on their social media pages. “We are so excited to share our treats with you all! Stay tuned for shop updates.”

Ten daily flavors are on offer including Glazed, Chocolate, Strawberry, Boston Cream, and rotating specials like Cookies-and-Cream Filled, Peanut Butter Chocolate Oreo, Cap’n Crunch, Baklava, Matcha, S’mores and Gingerbread. Weekly offerings include doughnut sandwiches.

Owners Shawn Petersen and Nicole Dao, a couple who adopted a vegan diet in their early teens, started selling doughnuts in DC on special orders last year.

“We have been vegan for over a decade, and we both have a passion for food. We’ve driven hours just to try new vegan restaurants, and we have literally planned trips around food,” Dao told VegNews.

The couple wanted to open a doughnut shop closer home in DC after seeing many such shops throughout the country. “Donuts have always been one of our favorite foods, and we wanted to bring a shop to DC. The objective is to create the most ridiculous and delicious menu possible,” said Dao.
