DC Makes Cooling Centers Available as Part of Heat Emergency Plan

-

DC Mayor Muriel Bowser activated cooling centers around the city as part of her heat emergency plan on Sunday as the region sees its second wave of extreme heat this year.

The District provides a map where residents seeking relief can check the status of the cooling center closest to their location by typing their address in a search bar.

Individuals who need transportation to a cooling center can call 202-399-7093 or dial 311 to request assistance.

For all animal emergencies, including animals left outside in extreme temperatures or in vehicles, you can contact the Humane Rescue Alliance at 202-576-6664.

The centers will operate through Wednesday.

The DC government is warning residents that hot and humid conditions can cause medical problems such as heat exhaustion and stroke, and asking them to stay indoors as much as possible.

If you need to go outside, you should limit exposure to the sun, and avoid hard work between 10 am and 3 pm, according to officials. You should also apply sunscreen (SPF 15-30) at least 20 minutes before going outside, and remember to drink plenty of water.
