There has been approximately a 20 percent surge in unarmed robberies in the District of Columbia this year, data from the D.C. police revealed, according to WTOP.
Armed robberies, on the other hand, went down around 10 percent compared to 2018.
Only last week, 18 robberies took place in the city with police making 22 arrests in relation to them. One of the suspects was a 12-year-old boy, who was allegedly involved in four incidents.
Over 70 percent of the suspects arrested last week for robbery were reportedly teenagers.
As of November 25, 2019, the total number of robberies in D.C. was 2,033 this year, which points to a 10 percent rise compared to 2018, when the figure was 1,845.
A total of 1,347 out of the 2,033 incidents in 2019 so far were unarmed robberies. In the same period of time last year, 1,100 of all robberies were unarmed.
The last time the number of unarmed robberies rose in the District was seven years ago.
