Amazon is in “advanced talks” and seriously considering Crystal City in Washington, D.C. metropolitan area for opening its second headquarters, according to The Washington Post.
As per the latest report from The New York Times, Amazon is planning to split the headquarters, called HQ2, in two locations – Crystal City in Washington suburb and in New York City.
Last year, Amazon announced that it was looking for space to open its second headquarter in North America, which would create about 50,000 new jobs. Following the announcement, several states and local governments tried to attract the retail giant, offering millions in tax incentives if the new headquarters was opened in their city.
Washington, D.C. had been a strong contender to house company’s second headquarter. Amazon founder and CEO Jeff Bezos is the owner of The Washington Post, and also has a home in D.C. area. In January this year, Washington was named among the list of 20 top contenders for the second headquarters along with Montgomery County.
Crystal City is well connected by mass transit system and major highways which is required by Amazon for its new headquarter.
However, the deal is not final yet despite the company being in “advanced talks” about Washington, D.C. “Memo to the genius leaking info about Crystal City, VA as #HQ2 selection. You’re not doing Crystal City, VA any favors,” tweeted Mike Grella, Amazon’s economic development director.
In September, Jeff Bezos and the Amazon’s board of directors visited Washington, D.C. for a series of high profile public appearances lined up for Bezoz. However, despite speculations, no announcement was made about choosing Washington, D.C. as Amazon’s second headquarter.
Last September, Amazon started search for its headquarters outside its current home in Seattle, which generated a lot of interest from elected officials across North America. Different locations submitted about 238 proposals for the project, but the company didn’t make any announcements after narrowing the field to 20 locations in January this year.
