Washington, D.C. has been ranked as the “Best Historical City to Visit in the United States” by the U.S. News & World Report, which released its 2019 rankings.

In order to put together the list, U.S. News evaluated “the storied pasts, preserved landmarks, notable monuments and tourist-friendly services in each city – as well as votes from users.”

D.C. also ranked first in Best Places to Visit in May, third in Best Family Summer Vacations, third in Best Cheap Family Vacations, fifth in Best Spring Vacations, fifth in Best Family Vacations in the USA, eighth in Best Weekend Getaways, eighth in Best Places to Visit in the USA, 16th in Best Fall Vacations.

As the “Best Historical City to Visit,” D.C. stood out with its classic attractions like the White House, the Washington Monument, the U.S. Capitol and the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History, as well as the Tidal Basin.

Also mentioning the recent explosion of restaurants, cafes, boutiques and clubs in the city, the report stated that the best times to visit D.C. is from September to November and March to May.

“In the autumn, the sweltering summer is gone, taking with it most of the high season tourists. All that’s left are crisp breezes and changing leaves, which, by the way, look great against all those marble monuments,” the report said.

March and April are among the recommended times to visit the city, especially because of the National Cherry Blossom Festival.

Summer is a time, when it is difficult to explore the outdoors in D.C., according to the U.S. News & World Report, which added “Many museums blast air conditioning, so if you can stand the heat, you’ll find plenty of free attractions to keep you entertained.”

Calling winter a “low season,” the report explained that it is more likely to find lower hotel prices, however, freezing cold temperatures and snowstorms might ruin your visit.

As for transportation options, it was stated that the best way to travel around D.C. is Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) public transportation system, as it is “clean, safe and efficient.”
